Volunteers

This page considers actions that can be taken by people interested in increasing the impact and effectiveness of the conference The Technoprogressive Opportunity:

  • People who share the vision that the conference could
    • make a significant difference to public discussion of key topics,
    • and help to strengthen a technoprogressive coalition
  • People willing to apply some of their time in support of these outcomes.

This page will change regularly, as plans progress.

To volunteer to help with any of these actions, or to suggest other activities that can be taken in support of the conference, please contact the organisers.

(A WhatsApp group is being established to help coordinate the activities of volunteers willing to assist the conference.)

Assist with event publicity

Invite journalists, podcasters, and bloggers to share news of the event, so that more people are inspired to attend it.

Provide more information about the venue’s neighbourhood

What should be added to the section “Also in the neighbourhood” of the event page?

  • More information about possible accommodation
  • More information about nearby pubs and restaurants

Explore options for evening gatherings of speakers and attendees

What nearby venues can be considered for gatherings on the evenings of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday?

  • Probably sit-down dinners on Friday and Saturday, ideally in a suitably spacious private room
  • Possibly a pub gathering on Sunday

(Speakers will have their costs covered by the organisers; non-speakers will need to cover their own costs; numbers will need to be confirmed in advance.)

Assist with speaker liaison

Be ready to meet and greet speakers when they arrive, and to check they are ready to give their talks at the agreed time.

Liaise with the AV team inside the venue

Ensure that each talk is filmed.

Monitor the audio within the room, and take actions as needed to fix audio problems.

(Still to be investigated) Ensure that each talk is live-streamed.

Establish system for remote submission of questions

Assuming (see previous point) that talks can be live-streamed, establish a system (e.g. Slack or Discord) whereby remote attendees can engage in real-time conversation about the event, and to submit questions for consideration.

Any such system would also need a volunteer to monitor and manage it.

Liaise with the catering team inside the venue

Ensure that suitable teas / coffees / water / etc are available during the registration period in the mornings and during the afternoon breaks.

Ensure that suitable lunch options are also provided.

Explore options for books to be distributed at some points during the event

Some speakers are interested in having their books made available to attendees.

Review articles received in advance of the event

As stated at the end of the main conference webpage, “The conference organisers invite people interested in the themes of the event to submit short articles to be published online ahead of the event.”

We need a process to review (and in some cases suggest edits) to these articles ahead of publication.
